OLT memiliki keterkaitan dengan Fiber to the Home (FTTH). Apa yang dimaksud dengan FTTH? Fiber to the Home (FTTH) yang juga disebut sebagai Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) adalah pemasangan dan penggunaan serat optik dari titik pusat langsung ke bangunan individu seperti tempat tinggal, gedung apartemen, dan bisnis untuk menyediakan akses internet berkecepatan tinggi yang belum pernah terjadi sebelumnya. OLT sendiri berisi router gateway (GWR), Central Processing Unit (CPU), kartu uplink voice gateway (VGW), passive optical network cards yang dapat mengirimkan sinyal data kepada pengguna pada 1490 nanometer (nm). Sinyal tersebut dapat melayani hingga 128 ONT yang berkisar hingga 12.5 mil dengan menggunakan pembagi optik (optical splitters).
Fungsi OLT
Optical Line Terminal ( OLT ) memiliki dua fungsi utama yaitu sebagai berikut:
- Mengubah sinyal standar yang digunakan oleh penyedia FiOS ke frekuensi dan framing yang digunakan oleh sistem PON (Passive Optical Network).
- Mengkoordinasi multiplexing antara perangkat konversi di terminal jaringan optic (OLT) yang terletak di lokasi pelanggan.
OLT secara luas diadopsi dalam akses jaringan serat optic di berbagai tingkatan daerah seperti desa, kabupaten, hingga kota.
